A company opening an office, recruiting a role or launching a service gives you something to investigate. It does not tell you that a project is funded, that a team is struggling or that the business wants an external supplier.
Use public changes to make your research more specific. The useful output is a dated signal log linking an observed event to a possible service question. It should also show what could disprove the connection, so your first message does not sound as if you know a problem the company has never described.
Record the event before the interpretation
Start with the company’s own announcement, careers page, product page or other direct source. Record what it actually says, when the event is meant to happen and when you checked it. Publication date, event date and research date may differ.
Distinguish a company statement from somebody else’s speculation. A recruitment advertisement can establish that a role was advertised when you checked it. It may no longer be open later. It does not establish how work is currently handled or whether a consultant could provide an alternative.
Keep a short factual note. “Company announced a second location for November” is an observation. “Expansion has overwhelmed their operations team” is an interpretation requiring evidence. If the second sentence is the reason your offer seems useful, turn it into an open question instead.
Build a dated signal log
The following is an original working format. The entries are fictional examples, not market findings or real prospects.
| Field | Example entry |
|---|---|
| Source event | Company announces a second service location. |
| Event and checked dates | Opening planned for November; announcement checked in October. |
| Service connection | Consultant reviews work allocation across operating locations. |
| What remains unknown | Whether planning is shared, whether anything needs changing and who owns it. |
| Contradictory evidence | Existing central process already covers the new location. |
| Relevant function | Person coordinating branch operations, responsibility to verify. |
| Next research action | Read the service model and identify the operational owner. |
| Review condition | Recheck when the opening occurs or before a later approach. |
Use the log to avoid treating several versions of the same announcement as several independent signals. A press release republished on another site does not create a second project. Link related evidence back to one account and one working hypothesis.
Turn the signal into a neutral question
Connect the observation to work the recipient could reasonably recognise. For the fictional location example: “I saw the announcement about the new branch. Will work allocation sit with each branch, or is it coordinated centrally?” This asks about the relevant task without claiming that the current arrangement is broken.
If you explain your service, keep the relationship explicit: “I help service teams review that handoff.” Do not imply you work with the company or know its internal figures. Use the answer to decide whether a further conversation would be useful.
Huthwaite’s SPIN methodology distinguishes questions about context, difficulties, consequences and the value of resolving a need. The practical questions in this article are our own. Do not run them as a rigid script or press a person to confirm a problem they do not have.
A reply saying “our central team already handles it” can be a useful qualification result. Ask a relevant follow-up only if there is a real remaining question. The purpose of research is to find fit, not to manufacture urgency from any public change.
Expire or retire the hypothesis
Give each signal a review condition rather than an automatic sales sequence. A launch date passing may require a fresh check. A direct answer may close the hypothesis entirely. Preserve that answer so a new researcher does not revive the account using the old announcement.
When a relevant role is missing, use a small profile search to fill that specific gap. Leadsforlinked can help collect selected LinkedIn profiles for inspection and CSV export. The profile record supplies research context; it does not convert a signal into a qualified opportunity.
Before approaching someone later, recheck the event, the person’s responsibility and the existing conversation. Then choose the next action from current evidence: a sensible question, a relevant offer, a hold or no further contact.
