Buying Lead Lists or Building Your Own: A Practical Cost Worksheet.

Compare research options on the same brief. Include verification, rework and relationship checks, then use a labelled cost example to decide what to test before paying for volume.

From the team behind Leadsforlinked. Worked examples are fictional unless explicitly identified otherwise.

The choice between buying a list and building one yourself depends on the work you need the records to support. A cheap row is expensive if your team cannot use it; an internally researched list can also cost more than expected when the brief is unclear.

Compare options against the same written deliverable. Include the work needed after collection, then choose a bounded test. The calculation below is an original planning example using invented inputs, not a market-price comparison or a Leadsforlinked quotation.

Compare the same deliverable

Specify the company segment, role criteria, required fields, exclusions and intended next action. Distinguish professional profile research from a requirement for verified contact addresses. A file with names and profile URLs is not interchangeable with a file promising a separately verified email field.

Agree what counts as a distinct record and how uncertain information should appear. Ask a supplier how the sample relates to the larger delivery, what will be checked and how a clear brief mismatch is handled. Do the same for an internal researcher rather than assuming internal work needs no acceptance standard.

Use the prospect-research brief to define the work and the CSV sample check to inspect the actual delivery. Those checks answer different questions from the financial comparison here.

Include the work after delivery

A simple planning formula is:

total task cost = acquisition cost + review cost + rework cost + other explicit task costs

For an internal task, acquisition cost can be hours multiplied by your own chosen internal hourly cost. For an external task, it can be the actual quote. Use the same treatment of tax and currency on both sides. If a cost is unknown, leave it unknown and obtain it; do not silently turn a blank into zero.

Include time spent checking role relevance, duplicates, account relationships and a usable handoff. These tasks may exist under either option. Avoid double-counting if a quoted service already includes a particular review.

Cost is only one criterion. Field suitability, source transparency, permission requirements, freshness and the ability to correct a brief mismatch may make one option unsuitable regardless of its price. A worksheet cannot resolve those unknowns by adding a low hourly rate.

Work through an explicit hypothetical

Invented example: a consultant compares two ways of producing the same research batch. EUR50 per hour is a chosen illustration, not a wage, market rate or product price.

Cost item Internal research example External quote example
Initial collection 4 hours × EUR50 = EUR200 Supplier quote: EUR140
Internal review 1 hour × EUR50 = EUR50 1.5 hours × EUR50 = EUR75
Expected rework in this exercise 0.5 hour × EUR50 = EUR25 1 hour × EUR50 = EUR50
Total under these assumptions EUR275 EUR265

The external option is EUR10 lower only under these invented assumptions. The small difference is not a buying recommendation. If its review requires another half-hour, the external total becomes EUR290. If either option lacks a required field, neither total establishes that the result is usable.

Write the uncertain input next to the result. For example: “External review time untested; inspect a real sample before choosing.” Do not call the difference a saving until actual comparable work and costs support that conclusion.

Buy the next useful test

Choose the smallest test that resolves the important uncertainty: inspect an actual sample, time an internal research task or obtain a quote for a precisely defined brief. A larger order will not fix a disagreement about what counts as an acceptable record.

If you want to collect selected LinkedIn profiles yourself, inspect the Leadsforlinked workflow and the current offer in the app. The verified path uses People search, the Chrome extension, an audience and CSV export. Check the actual fields and coverage for your task before choosing a larger extraction. This article does not quote current plan prices or promise a cost advantage.

Record the decision and its reason: build internally, commission the task, change the brief or stop. Keep the rejected option’s assumptions so you can revisit the choice if your capacity or the supplier’s scope changes. The useful decision concerns a deliverable you can use, rather than a headline cost per row.
